The 7 Second Rule

Did you know that people form a first impression within 7 seconds of meeting someone for the first time? When your boss introduces you to a new colleague on your team, you can’t help but make snap judgments within those initial few seconds. Thoughts like “Wow, she looks old school”, or “I bet he sleeps around” might pop into your head. We often make these quick judgments without even hearing a word from the person. In other words, we’re mostly focused on the visual image.

In the world of personal branding, how we visually represent ourselves plays a significant role in shaping others’ perception of us. It’s important to recognise that personal branding encompasses various elements. From our clothing choices to body language and overall presentation, every detail contributes to creating a lasting impression.

Dress for Success: The Power of Clothing

The clothes we wear have the power to influence how others see us. Dressing in a refined and elegant manner can instantly elevate our personal brand. Choosing high-quality garments that align with our desired image and paying attention to details like fit and tailoring can have a profound impact on how others perceive us.

Have you heard of the term “quiet luxury”? If you’re into luxury clothing (and can afford it), try going for a more subtle luxury style.

(On the flip side, this is the complete opposite of quiet luxury:)

But remember, luxury items aren’t always necessary. Personally, I prefer simple clothing that fits well. It’s also important to take care of our bodies. There has been a lot of attention around body-shaming, but what I’m talking about here is that we don’t need to be extremely ripped. However, it’s essential to stay reasonably fit if we want people to take us seriously. At the end of the day, it takes discipline to maintain our body shape.

Body Language: Confidence and Presence

Our body language speaks volumes about our personal brand. Cultivating a confident and poised posture exudes authority and success. Pay attention to your gestures, facial expressions, and overall demeanour to ensure they align with the luxury lifestyle you aspire to embody. Practice good posture, maintain eye contact, and exude self-assuredness that leaves a lasting impression on those you interact with.

Have you ever come across someone who moves or talks quickly with exaggerated hand gestures? You probably wouldn’t think of them as someone particularly senior or capable within an organisation. It’s best to avoid that and strive to be calm and subtle. Calmness says a lot about a person. People who remain calm under pressure demonstrate strong emotional intelligence. They understand their emotions well and can manage them effectively.

Embracing Uniqueness: Memorable Characteristics

Many people struggle to remember faces. Having a unique characteristic can make a significant difference in leaving a lasting impression. Whether it’s a well-groomed beard, a signature accessory like a pocket square or earring, or a distinctive hairstyle, incorporating a memorable element into your personal style helps people form a strong association with your brand. This unique characteristic becomes an instant conversation starter and sets you apart from the crowd, making it easier for others to remember you and your personal brand.

For example, I’m just an average-built guy who isn’t particularly good-looking or fit. However, I found that growing a beard made it easier for people to remember me.

By embracing a unique characteristic, you not only showcase your individuality but also create a visual cue that triggers recognition in the minds of those you encounter. When people see that particular characteristic, they immediately connect it with your personal brand, reinforcing your presence in their memory. This can be especially beneficial in networking events, business meetings, or social gatherings where you want to make a lasting impression and stand out from the crowd.
